As many people know, F.A.F.S.A. (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is a required form in order to attend any college and submit to a scholarship in many cases. FAFSA is a very in depth form requiring information of the students income, amounts in checking, savings, mutual funds, and stocks. They also incur about the amounts of money in guardianss accounts (all accounts and assets). They take a net worth estimation of your home or property. First of all, who wants the government to know how much you have, especially in your own personal savings, why should it matter to them? The problem I faced with this was not only was this a total infringement on my privacy and my parents, but I was obligated to fill it out in order to complete scholarship forms and attend college or apply for financial aid.
The government, by having this information, not only uses it to classify your class status, but also assumes that all that money listed can be added and put towards the education you seek. But who ever said that I was entitled to my parents for my education? Do they expect that I am going to mortgage my house or sell it for a college education? This form allows discrimination to occur deciding who will and will not recieve aid from the government as well as who is applicable for various grants. What if your parents do make enough but will not support your education? What if they don't want to co-sign a loan for you?
I personally have attempted getting student loans through the bank and the school, but without a co-signer (in which my parents are in no position to do so) I am qualified for a miniscile amount of money or completely denied. Stafford loans-subsidized and subsidized- have denied me. I have applied for numerous scholarships and time and again have not suceeded. This is the same issue millions face today.
